What is Unify America?

Unify America is a nonpartisan nonprofit on a mission to replace politics with problem solving. We are seeking a marketing leader who will develop, implement, and oversee our marketing initiatives and branding efforts in order to reach Americans who want to bridge our political divides, participate directly in finding solutions to our country’s challenges, and save our democracy.

 

Saving democracy? Seriously?

Reasonable question. We’ll get to that. The ideal candidate is someone who is highly skilled, collaborative, data-driven, strategic, adaptive, and a creative thinker. We need a rock star who can lead a team as we grow and is willing, able and ready to execute in the trenches right now. We are in the early days and are looking for smart, passionate can-do people to join our growing, ambitious team. 

 

Let’s get back to the saving democracy part.

Think Americans are hopelessly divided? We are on the way to proving that the vast majority of Americans (over 90%) share many of the same goals for the country. If that sounds crazy, then let us give you an example: we demonize each other over gun control legislation, but gun control isn’t the goal, it’s a tactic. Reducing violence is the goal, and most of us want that. We don’t realize that for most political issues we’re just arguing about tactics or even less productively, political personalities.

Our long term quest is ambitious: bringing together tens of thousands of Americans, including legislators, to identify and implement a shared solution to one of the many national problems that has bedeviled Congress and the country for decades. 

 

...but a journey of a thousand miles begins with a first step. 

Our first program is “The Unify Challenge”, a broad-ranging survey which Americans, from different backgrounds, take together -- two at a time -- via video conference. The Challenge helps people see that we share many of the same goals for our country, even if we are on “the other team’. Our goal is to invite millions of Americans to take the Unify Challenge and we’ve spent the last year developing technology to scale up to our vision. 

 

That’s where you come in.

Now we need a talented marketing “figure it outer” - someone who will help us grow our brand, find our audiences, and spread our message to them. 

 

Tell me more. What’s the role?

The Head of Marketing is a hands-on position responsible for all marketing, communications and media activities with the goal of building the brand, raising awareness, driving program engagement, and attracting new community members. 


What you’ll do:


Brand Management

  • Build a strong and sustainable brand identity consistent with the Unify America mission and values.

  • Ensure our values of “big tent” diversity, equity, and inclusion are reflected in all aspects of Unify America’s brand expression.


Marketing

  • Oversee all marketing campaigns, messaging, and collateral that’s relevant and effective for reaching Unify America’s diverse audiences and diverse communities.

  • Provide customer insights to the team to drive decision-making, using all methods of collecting and analyzing user data.

  • Develop effective partnerships with media and partner organization leaders to enhance Unify America’s marketing and promotional efforts.

  • Work closely with our Head of Partnerships to create strategic marketing for live and virtual events.

  • Define key performance indicators, and lead the team to measure, track and report on the effectiveness of marketing, communications, and programming against our goals.

  • Work closely with our Founder to develop thought leadership opportunities.


Communications and Public Relations

  • Oversee the development of concept and copy for all high-level communication projects including websites, newsletters, email campaigns, advertising, social media, event outreach, and presentations.

  • Create and manage listening channels to collect and respond to feedback from our diverse array of audiences.

  • Pursue opportunities for earned media coverage, including writing and sending press releases and pitching stories. 

  • Working with PR consultants, develop effective partnerships and working relationships with media to ensure positive Unify America coverage and maximum exposure.

  • Serve as media spokesperson or external ambassador with key constituents when needed.

  • Plan, develop and direct social media strategies designed to optimize Unify America’s ability to reach and engage key stakeholders and the general public.


Community Engagement

  • Work closely with the Leadership Team to build and launch an effective and comprehensive strategy for engaging volunteers and other community members through events, including materials for partner cultivation.

  • Periodically assess the efficacy of community engagement efforts, through program surveys and other instruments, gauging the sentiments of all stakeholders to inform future engagement strategies.

  • Ensure Unify America’s website is effective and efficient in communicating with volunteers and participants.


Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of marketing experience, with experience managing a marketing department of 3 or more staff members

  • Experience developing brands across multi-channel, multi-audience online and offline marketing campaigns

  • Experience scaling user acquisition, activation, and retention

  • Strong writing and storytelling chops to create copy and communications in the kind of inclusive, welcoming, intelligent voice that is the hallmark of Unify America 

  • Committed to “big tent” diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging

  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to lead others to manage work plans, timelines, and budgets; outstanding attention to detail

  • can build and cultivate partnerships. One thing we know: to build our community we’ll need to partner with hundreds of organizations that are supportive of, and aligned with, our mission. You’ll work closely with our Head of Partnerships to help our partner organizations send their members, congregants, students, employees, and audiences to us - and find ways to make those reciprocal relationships a win-win.  

  • enjoys taking the lead on new projects. This is a brand new role for us. We need someone ready to take the reins, without heavy oversight and guidance. When it comes to achieving big marketing goals, we need you to guide us (not the other way around).
