At Artemis Ward, the art director sits at the center of our work, partnering with the creative director (design) to pair strategic insights with creative leadership so that our team arrives at solutions that are intelligent, beautiful, and impactful. The ideal candidate for this position can move seamlessly from concept to execution with a knack for delivering fresh perspectives that are informed by best practices and the latest thinking in the landscapes around us. At heart, the AD is a systems-level thinker who understands how discrete elements need to work together in order to deliver holistic brand experiences. And the AD is a translator, too — someone who’s able to understand and evaluate creative strategy and is comfortable communicating that strategy to other Artemis Ward designers as well as our clients. As a key contributor at an agency that works across industries and geographies, the AD will help define the future of our agency as well as the future of digital marketing, brand storytelling, and beyond. This position works closely with and reports to the creative director. While this position is based in our Washington, D.C., office, remote work options are possible. 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Leads efforts to develop creative concepts and executions in a cross-disciplinary manner, partnering with the creative director, strategists, writers, and designers to build smart, innovative approaches

  • Applies strategic knowledge of the digital and social landscape to all work efforts

  • Brings a deep understanding of big-picture strategic vision to client and internal work

  • Inspires team members to level-up the creative thinking through focused direction, guidance, and mentorship

  • Combines strategic rigor with design vision in order to bring discipline, purpose, and impact to every deliverable 

  • Provides hands-on direction to ensure quality in everything we produce

  • Solves design problems effectively and efficiently through ownership, delegation, and coaching;  

    • When owning: drive the creative vision and execution

    • When delegating: set clear design directions and provide guidance to team members, contractors, and vendors

    • When coaching: inspire, mentor, and provide critical review of creative work

  • Brings a strong perspective of innovation and creativity, leading agency best practices, driving awareness of industry standards, and adapting to changing technology.

  • Leverages expertise and professional relationships to yield new business opportunities

  • Contributes to new business proposals, presentations, scoping, and planning

  • Shows up to work each day with a collaborative spirit and a positive attitude

  • Is fun, humble, and passionate with a good dose of hustle

Must haves:

  • Must be a people person

  • 6–8 years relevant experience at an agency or in-house

  • Comfort presenting to clients and partners

  • Strong portfolio rooted in digital visual design

  • Aptitude/interest in motion graphics, expertise in After Effects

  • High drive and pride in your work

Nice to haves:

  • Experience working across a range of industries and platforms

  • Experience designing for responsive interfaces, using programs and tools like Sketch, Figma, InVision, Adobe XD

  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS

  • Ability to work seamlessly with developers and speak their language

  • Video editing skills 

  • A few good stories to roll out during happy hour
